Carved out of a 230-acre sand quarry, The Pit has received rave reviews since opening in 1985. An original Dan Maples design, it is currently ranked as one of the Top 50 courses in America open to the public, and in the Top 10 in North Carolina by both Golf Digest and Golfweek. The Country Club of Whispering Pines features 36 outstanding holes. Considered one of Ellis Maples' finest works, The East course is a 7100-yard layout featuring subtle doglegs and strategically placed bunkers. The West Course at 6500 yards is a true shot maker's delight, featuring rolling terrain, hardwood forests and creative green contours on the front nine, and waterways on each of the back nine holes. Perennially classified as one of the finest courses in the Pinehurst area. The course was designed by Peter Tufts, great grandson of the founder of Pinehurst Resort.
