Did you know anyone with a handicap index of less than 1.4 can try to qualify for the U.S. Open? This year, 9052 entries -- the second most in the history of the championship -- were accepted with 18-hole local qualifiers played at 111 sites from May 7-20. Sectional qualifying rounds (36 holes) were played at two international sites on May 24 and 13 sites in the USA on June 7-8.
Did you know how tough it is to defend a U.S. Open title? Since 1991, only two champions (Tiger Woods and Retief Goosen) have finished better than 40th the year after their title. Woods has actually done it three times (in 2001, 2003 and 2009). Goosen finished 11th in 2005 after winning the crown in 2004. Curtis Strange was the last player to successfully defend the championship with wins in 1988 and 1989.
This week's U.S. Open field of 156 golfers will be cut after the first two rounds to the low 60 scores and ties plus any player within 10 strokes of the lead.
