About Sugarloaf Mountain Golf Club (Minneola, FL)
This semi-private club, designed by the architect team of Bill Coore & Ben Crenshaw, is their first-ever Florida project and already destined to become legendary. Set in Minneola (west of Orlando, near Clermont) atop the highest point on Florida's peninsula, Sugarloaf Mountain offers spectacular views, dramatic elevation changes up to 250 feet, and features backdrops and a memorable layout unlike any other in Florida; the vistas are absolutely spectacular! Following the natural features of the land, it highlights Coore & Crenshaw's signature emphasis of strategic concepts meshed with simplistic design - just pure golf at its best, no bells & whistles. Lake Apopka and lush oak forests provide beautiful rural and background scenery at a convenient distance from Orlando... approximately 35-40 minutes from most area hotels. Check out those surcharges - great value! ADDED-VALUE: FREE REPLAYS per availability (9/01-12/31/11 and 5/01-12/31/12).

Rodney (Bel Aire, KS) says:
New to us this year. A little rough around the edges but overall in good shape. Greens were excellent. Like the variety of holes, not flat like many Fla. courses. We will go back.

Jerry (Omro, WI) says:
Hope they can make it there, it is a nice course!

Russell (Trenton, OH) says:
By far the worst course we played on trip. With the location price should be lowered to encourage people to come and play.

Joe (Rogers, MN) says:
The story behind this course's development should be researched by anyone thinking of playing here. Understanding it's minimalist deign by Coore/Crenshaw and having an understanding of the financial crisis it finds itself in will help in setting expectations. That said, there are many reasons for playing it. One, you could walk if you wanted. There are no half mile treks between green and tee like so many other courses around Orlando. Two, location. Some have said it's too far out but it's an easy half hour ride from the Disney area. It's also a very unique area of Florida. Elevations and views are spectacular. Three, greens and tees were very nice and the course design fit very well with it's surroundings - nothing forced or unnatural. Complaints of a couple blind tee shots are vastly overstated and the uphill finishing hole is better than some would have you believe. They tell you flat out there is no maintained rough. Fairways are generous but if you do miss, while your ball is likely to be found and playable, your lie will be challenging. Surprisingly, it doesn't negatively affect the experience much and, maybe at this stage of Sugarloaf's history, actually enhances it. I loved it.

Linda (Cobourg, ON) says:
so far out of town that the course was empty - but it was very pretty and fairly well maintained. Had a great laugh: the golf pro also made our breakfast sandwich (which was excellent).

Roger (Gahanna, OH) says:
Obviously a new, understaffed course. the proshop attendent was checking us in, taking calls, getting people refreshments, all by themselves. the course didn't feel mature. Rate of play was great because no one was there. Would give it one more try.

Dennis (Schenectady, NY) says:
Staff were great but the location was quite a drive. Did not prefer the "links" course as much as the others. Probably would not choose this one next time - too far to drive.

Bill (Prospect, KY) says:
This course is a diamond in the rough. The course was fair. Greens and bunkers were 3rd bhind Shingle Creek and Diamond Back.

Mike (Peoria, IL) says:
The layout of this course is great, but it needs a lot of work to be considered playable for our group. Should be a greatly reduced rate to get people to play there!

A little out of the way but worth the drive

Tim (Palm Beach Gardens, FL) says:
Green were very hard due to the cold Winter. We combined our own set of tees to play the couse at 6000 yards. The course still won! It was tough to hold the green's and control your short game. There were a couple brutal pin placements where you would be thrilled with a two putt. It is a beautiful course and spectacular location.
