Orlando, Florida     (Return to Previous Page)

Whether or not the city of Orlando was named for Orlando Reeves - a U.S. Army soldier killed during the Seminole Indian War of the 1830s - is still something of a mystery. What is definitely true, however, is that visiting golfers over the years have come to think of Orlando as meaning "The land of OR." As in: "Do you want to tee it up on this beautiful course, OR would you prefer to take on that gorgeous layout the PGA pros play every year?" And as in: "After we play, does this restaurant sound good for dinner, OR should we try something different and go here?"

In more recent years, however, lots of golfers have been bringing their spouses and kids to Orlando and are dividing up their time with the other loves of their lives. This, naturally, has given "The land of OR" a whole new meaning. As in: "Since you allowed me play golf yesterday, shall we spend today at this exciting amusement park, OR would you rather visit this interesting attraction?" And as in: "Would you like to take part in this fun activity, OR should we just relax and work on our tans?" And the list of OR's go on and on.

But that's Orlando, Florida - one of the most vibrant, beautiful, exciting, and fun-filled cities you could ever visit. And not just in America but the whole world. It's such a popular destination, in fact, that 35 million people from around the globe visit here each year. One of the many reasons is because there are so many things to see and do within its nearly 110 square miles of area. Still another is because the annual average temperature is a pleasant 72.3 degrees Fahrenheit. Especially during the winter months, either attribute is more than enough reason for our friends from "up north" to head south to Orlando.

Orange County National Panther Lake Golf Club Golfers, as mentioned, have long considered central Florida one of the best places to tee it up in the whole country - winter or summer. (Gee, could that be the reason why more than 30 PGA, LPGA and Champions tour pros have homes here?) The weather is almost always ideal and there are over 100 layouts to choose from within a 45-minute drive from downtown Orlando. If you want to try a course the PGA Tour pros play, then check out Walt Disney Resort. Two of the five courses there (Magnolia and Palm) are the venues for the FUNAI Classic each October. Two other sturdy tracts are the Panther Lake and Crooked Cat courses at Orange County National Golf Club, host of the 2003 PGA Tour Qualifying School. Never played a Greg Norman-designed course? There are two at ChampionsGate Golf Club and one of them is the site of the Father/Son Challenge that northern golfers no doubt watch on TV each November. Best of all, however, is the fact that there's a course in central Florida to fit every skill level - from long and strong to friendly and fun - and most offer a package to fit just about every budget. In addition to the wonderful weather and beautiful location, golf in Orlando is about variety.

But hold on a minute, Mickey. "Variety" is a great way to describe Orlando's literally hundreds of other activities as well. And without a doubt, there is one to match the interest and enjoyment of every member of your family or foursome.

Disney's Magnolia Golf Club Not surprisingly, the most popular activity for younger visitors is spending time at one of Orlando's more than a dozen theme parks. And who could blame them? The two most famous - Walt Disney World and Universal Orlando - offer so many sensational things to see and do, most families need more than one day to take them all in. At Disney World, for example, visitors can begin their fun-filled day at Magic Kingdom OR Animal Kingdom OR Disney-MGM Studios OR Epcot Center. Either attraction is a great place to start, and all are a feast for the eyes, ears and imagination. You'll find two fantastic choices at Universal Orlando as well - Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure - and both offer a number of spectacular interactive experiences that are almost impossible to describe.

There's more to Orlando than dodging dinosaurs, tracking tornados and flying with Dumbo, however. For sun worshippers in need of thawing out from the cold back home, the clear choice is to head to one of the many beautiful, white sandy beaches to be found within a few miles of downtown. For visitors who would rather return with a good bargain than a good tan, the Orlando area is loaded with name-brand factory outlets offering low prices on the highest-quality products. If your family is wild about wildlife, you'll want to gobble up all there is to see at Gatorland, the Central Florida Zoological Park or Sea World. For a quieter walk with nature, though - and a chance for everyone to recharge his batteries for another busy day - the Harry P. Leu Botanical Gardens or the historic Bok Sanctuary are hard to beat for a relaxing break.

For a different kind of beauty, and to perhaps make education a part of your entertainment, the area is also home to the Cornell Fine Arts Museum, the Orlando Museum of Art, and the Orlando Science Center. And don't forget: the massive Kennedy Space Center is only forty-five minutes away. A tour of the facility is bound to be both amazing and memorable for every member of the family.

Accommodations in and around Orlando are just as varied as your selection of activities. Comfort levels can begin with "the basics" or go all the way up to "the best of the best," depending, of course, on your needs or expectations. All accommodations are within easy access to one attraction or another, and all are within reach of your choice of culinary delights - whether it be a fast food munchie or a Four-Star meal. At some point during your visit, you'll surely want to sample some of the sensational seafood that Central Florida is known for. The scallops are scrumptious, the grouper is great, the tuna is tasty, and - oh, my - the mahi-mahi is marvelous.

So when the weather outside gets frightful, and there's not much to do that's delightful, make the first in a long line of great choices and come on down to where the fun never sets: "The land of OR."
