Port St Lucie, Florida     (Return to Previous Page)

Like it is with Pinehurst, Pebble Beach and Pine Valley, visiting golfers speak of Port St. Lucie, Florida in hushed, measured tones. No, the reason is not because Port St. Lucie has played an important role in golf history like those previously mentioned places. The reason is because the golf around Port St. Lucie is sensational, the courses are usually not very crowded, and - shhh - they don't want too many people to know about it. Especially other visitors who have come to Florida - winter or summer - to tee it up for a few days. (Golfers get greedy some times? Hard to imagine.)

Eagle Marsh Golf Club Truth be known, compared to many other warm-weather golf destinations in the Sunshine State, Port St. Lucie is a bit under the radar. This is puzzling - especially in light of the many fine layouts to be found in the area. For example, did you know that Port St. Lucie is the only place on the planet that offers golf courses designed by four different members of the Fazio family? Tom, the most famous designer of the foursome, is responsible for the beautiful North and South courses at PGA Golf Club at the Reserve (a fabulous facility owned by the PGA of America that you'll hear more about in a minute). Jim Fazio, Tom's brother, did the design at PGA Country Club. Jim's son, Tommy, was the architect of the new Eagle Marsh Golf Club down the road in Jensen Beach. And Jim and his Uncle George share design credit for the course at the Legacy Golf & Tennis Club.

The Majors Golf Club "Fazio," however, isn't the only famous name attached to some of the courses around here. Jack Nicklaus (Ballantrae in Port St. Lucie and Hammock Creek in Palm City), Arnold Palmer (The Majors in Palm Bay), and Pete Dye (The Dye Course at PGA Golf Club) each found the terrain and location to their liking and did exceptional work. Two additional layouts to think about are in Stuart, just south of Port St. Lucie. The Champions Club at Summerfield, another Tom Fazio design, was the first public course to be awarded Audubon Signature Sanctuary status. The Florida Club (designed by Dick Gray and opened in 1997) is best described as "old fashioned," a course that's challenging without being "tricked up."

As indicated, there's more to PGA Golf Club than three beautiful courses. Also on site is the PGA of America's 35-acre Learning Center, a state-of-the-art practice facility where visitors can hit balls, work on their short game - even take a lesson if they're rusty from a long winter layoff. Players who are as nuts about golf history as they are about the game will definitely want to visit the Historical Center next to the Learning Center. The 8,300-square-foot facility is open every day during the winter months and it features exhibits that chronicle the long and illustrious history of the PGA of America. There is also an impressive library with thousands of golf books and periodicals that date back hundreds of years. It's a great way to either get fired-up for the next round or wrap up the one just played.

Additional diversions include taking in a minor league baseball game (St. Lucie Mets), diving down and exploring the numerous wrecked galleons off the nearby coast, boating, fishing, shopping or just strolling a beautiful white sandy beach. And don't forget to dive into some of the fresh seafood that's available all over the Port St. Lucie area. Like the average daily temperature here (73.2° F), it's to die for.

So if you've had it up to HERE with winter, or are simply looking for a new place to play during the summer, then check out the many golf packages that are available for Port St. Lucie. No matter what time of the year, a little sun, sand, surf, seafood and sensational golf is always good for the soul.
