Whether you are an avid golfer or a true beginner, you probably know Daytona Beach, Florida as the home one of the world's most famous racing events in history, the Daytona 500. And while visitors have been flocking to Daytona Beach for half a century to witness the Great American Race, Daytona Beach and the surrounding area offers golfers a relaxing, ocean-side golf destination centrally located to the area's finest courses (and best beaches) in the heart of the east coast of Florida.
Golfers can choose from an excellent variety of accommodations when visiting Daytona. For example, El Caribe Resort and Conference Center offers spacious guestrooms and a wide variety of amenities including two pools, fitness center, basketball, volleyball, and shuffleboard courts. La Quinta Inn Oceanside, one of Daytona's newest hotels, is just steps from the Atlantic Ocean and conveniently located to some of the best golf courses in the area. Perry's Ocean-Edge Resort offers excellent facilities and first-class amenities including a 10,000-square-foot tropical atrium with pool and spa. Further north in Palm Coast, Ginn Hammock Beach Resort offers world-class accommodations as well as two picturesque, championship golf course, the Ocean Course and the Conservatory Course.
When staying in Daytona, be sure to include the Grand Club courses on your "places to play" list. The Grand Club, two semi-private country clubs located just 30 minutes north of Daytona Beach, both offer a private club atmosphere and first-class facilities at a great value. Meandering through wetlands and dense woods, the Gary Player designed Cypress Course rewards shot making and course management without penalizing the average shot. The Pine Course, located nearby, is an Arnold Palmer/Ed Seay design with tree-lined fairways, well-bunkered greens, and newly enhanced water features after a complete renovation of the course in 2006. Both courses are kept in immaculate condition year round.
Other area golf destinations to consider when traveling to Daytona Beach include Cypress Head, a public course designed by Arthur Hills and Mike Dasher with water coming into play on 14 holes. Nearby Halifax Plantation, located in the prosperous Halifax community, boasts a terrific layout surrounded by towering pines and century old oaks. Once host to the LPGA Sprint Championship, Indigo Lakes stretches through natural woodlands and is bordered by water on 10 holes.
The ever popular LPGA International is home to the LPGA as well as two fine tests of championship golf, the Champions Course and the Legends Course. The Champions Course features elevated tees and greens, links style fairways, and a good use of the natural water hazards. The Legends Course is more of a thinker's golf course offering tree lined fairways and strategically placed bunkers and water hazards. The club features a full array of country club type amenities as well, including magnificent practice facilities and clubhouse.
Pelican Bay South, River Bend, and Victoria Hills all offer travelers unique opportunities when it comes to Daytona Beach golf. Pelican Bay South is located close to the airport and is ideal for an afternoon round on your arrival day. River Bend offers golf in the wild, with tight, tree lined fairways and no residential development on the course. Just down the road in DeLand, Victoria Hills, ranked #9 in the state by Golfweek, preserves the natural flow of the land in a very unique Florida golf setting.
