Downtown Gaylord is a charming Alpine Village featuring distinctive Swiss-inspired architecture. The chalet-style buildings found throughout the downtown area were first inspired by the development of the Otsego Ski Club in the 1930's. In 1968, Harold Elgas, then President of Gaylord State Bank convinced community leaders to adopt the theme throughout the town with the idea that Gaylord could capitalize on its location and amenities by architecturally distinguishing itself from other communities. Each year, annual festivals and activities continue to celebrate Gaylord's Swiss heritage that is shared with its sister city, Pontresina, Switzerland.
